Homelessness Awareness Week

This year, we are holding Homelessness Awareness Week in Bedford from the 26th November to the 2nd December.  We have a number of events taking place during the week, and would encourage you to come along to at least one, and find out how you can help our rough sleepers, and what facilities and services already exist.

Events:

Tuesday 27 November – SoupFest 11.30 – 6, Harpur Square.  Free! An annual festival of soup, live music & free skating for children (4-6pm).

For more details see soupfest.co.uk

Tuesday 27 November – Film Screening 6.30pm Vue Cinema, Riverside North*.  Sleeping Rough is a community-based film raising awareness of street homelessness in the UK. Using real interviews conducted with rough sleepers and members of the homeless community all around the country, the film is a docudrama that follows three characters, looking at the circumstances that force each of them to sleep on the street. Ticket includes a post-film drink and Q&A with the film’s director.

Tickets available here.

Wednesday 28 November – Poetry Reading & Book Signing by Seamus Fox, 7pm Rogan’s Books, Castle Lane*.   Having experienced alcoholism and homelessness, Séamus Fox came to understand the social and human injustices that result in so many people finding themselves living in the streets. “No Homeless Problem” is a collection of poems written from those stories, showing the reality of what it means to be homeless.

Tickets available here.

Thursday 29 November – Open Morning at Bedford Nightshelter.  An opportunity to see inside Bedford’s nightshelter for rough sleepers, and chat to the dedicated staff who work there.

Free tickets available here.

Friday 30 November – Open Morning at YMCA Weaver House, supported accommodation for people aged 30-64.  Weaver accommodates those who may have found themselves homeless or entrenched in chaotic lifestyles for longer periods of time.

Free tickets available here.
